Sage (Salvia officinalis L.) belongs to the Lamiaceae family and for many years it has been recognized as most valuable medical plants. It is cultivated in large quantities in Poland. Medicinal part of the plant is sage leaf (Salviae folium) which contains essential oils (e.g. thujone, 1,8-cineole, camphor), tannins, phenolic acids (e.g.rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid), flavonoids and mineral salts. Sage leaf is a traditionally used for mild gastrointestinal problems such as heartburn, bloating, infected mouth and throat as well as mild skin infection and excessive sweating. Sage oil has a strong antibacterial and antifungal effect. It is common knowledge that sage leaf improves memory and concentration. Sage leaves are often used in cosmetics industry for products such as shampoos, deodorants and toothpaste.
