Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench belongs to the Asteraceae family, originates from North America. In Poland it is an ornamental and medicinal plant. The root and herb of echinacea are used in herbal medicine.
Purple coneflower root Echinaceae purpureae radix is rich in polysaccharides, including inulin and arabinogalactans, as well as organic acids – derivatives of caffeic acid, mainly chicorylic (cichoric) and caftaric acid. Purple coneflower root is used as a traditional remedy for the cold. It also supports the immune system and has anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. Echinacea root is a pharmacopeial raw material (FP X) and has an EMA Community Monograph (EMA/HMPC/577784/2008).
