Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench
Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench belongs to the Asteraceae family, originates from North America. In Poland it is an ornamental and medicinal plant. The root and herb of echinacea are used in herbal medicine.
Purple coneflower leaf Echinacea purpurea folium contains phenolic acids, flavonoids, polysaccharides and essential oil. In echinacea leaf extracts, the main active ingredient is chicoric acid (cichoric acid), which comprises up to 50% of all polyphenolic compounds contained in the leaf. It is cichoric acid that shows the strongest immunostimulating effect. Thanks to the high content of polyphenols, echinacea leaf extracts strengthen the body’s immunity as well as have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral effects. Prophylactic use of echinacea leaf extracts is recommended for recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, colds and flu.
Purple coneflower herb Echinaceae purpureae herba contains large amounts of chicoric acid, flavonoids, polysaccharides and essential oil. The raw material has a status of well-established medical use in the treatment and prevention of colds as well as traditional use for small superficial wounds. Echinacea herb, similarly to the root, has a mobilizing effect on the immune system consequently raising immunity.
