Mullein flower belongs to Scrophulariaceae family. Medicinal part of the plant is mullein flower Verbasci flos consisting only of corolla and androecium. It is obtained from 3 species of Verbascum – great mullein V. thapsus L., denseflower mullein V. densiflorum Bertol. (V. thapsiforme Schrad) and orange mullein V. phlomoides L. The raw material contains among others mucus, iridoid glycoside (a.i. aukubin, catalpol), flavonoids and saponins. Mullein flower extracts are used traditionally to alleviate symptoms of hoarse, pharyngitis and dry cough during cold. They also have a protective effect on the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract.
