Elderberry Sambucus nigra L. belongs to Caprifoliaceae family and it is a bush found throughout the country and more often it is intentionally cultivated, both for food and beverage industry as well as pharmaceutical industry. Elderberry is a source of two medicinal materials – flower and fruit.
Elder flower Sambuci flos is rich in flavonoids, mainly quercetin and rutin, triterpenes, phenolic acids and mucus. It is traditionally used in relieving early cold symptoms and problems with sinuses. It is often combined with other herbs that are used in cold treatment such as coltsfoot leaf, lime flower, willow bark, chamomile flower and great yellow gentian root.
