Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara L.) belongs to the Asteraceae family and it can be commonly found throught the whole Poland. Herbal rew material of the plant is coltsfoot leaf (Farfarae folium), which includes mainly plant mucus, polysaccharide inulin, tannins, bitter substances, flavonoids and pyrrolizidine alkaloids PA (on large amounts they can cause harm to the liver). Coltsfoot leaf is used for inflamation of upper respiratory tract, dry cough, hoarseness as it has coating properties. Coltsfoot leaf should not be used longer than 3 weeks and only twice a year. Due to the content of PA, products made of coltsfoot leaf should not be used by pregnant and breastfeeding women and by children.
