Artichoke belongs to Asteraceae family and is used as vegetable and medicinal plant. Artichoke buds provide vitamins and minerals as well as the polysaccharide inulin. The raw material used in herbal medicine is the leaf of the artichoke Cynarae folium, which contains polyphenols (cynarin, chlorogenic acid), bitters, flavonoids, mucus, pectin. Processed products are widely used for gastrointestinal disorders, especially liver ailments. It is a traditional herbal medicinal product for relief of digestive disorders such as indigestion with feeling of fullness, bloating, problems with bile flow and liver function. Artichoke extracts are safe and can be used as a remedy for nausea during pregnancy.
